It was still dark when we left. I wandered
about the brightly-lit kitchen, packing a few
essential items and trying to keep a part of
myself asleep for as long as possible. And
then we were gone. It was as easy as that.
We had no idea what was going to happen.
We only knew we had to get away.
Realistically, it was our only chance and we
were going to take it, even if it killed us. It
seems strange now, thinking about it, but
that's the way it was. I said we should treat it
as an opportunity to get to know each other.
We were the lucky ones. Not everybody gets
the chance to be alone together. Not every
day anyway.
It was just the two of us. Nobody knew we
existed. We were all alone in the big
wide world.
